6th June Two Friends
Australia 1986

Director: Jane Campion
80 minutes, 16mm English
One of Campion's most intriguing films, Two Friends portrays two young woman growing up and growing apart. The movie reveals how, over the course of nine months, two 15 year old girls, once bosom buddies, take increasingly divergent paths towards adulthood, impelled by temperament, parenting and economic class. The story of the relationship is told in reverse making the viewer actively involved in the film and having to make hypotheses of how things came about. Our attention is directed towards how things got in such a muddle, rather than what is going to happen next.
A remarkable picture that puts you in an increasingly intimate and heartbreaking contact with the characters.
